The Wrekin Housing Trust award £10m extra care development
The Wrekin Housing Trust, one of the largest social housing providers in the West Midlands with almost 12,000 homes for rent and shared ownership across Shropshire and Staffordshire has awarded a £10m contract for the design and construction of a new Extra Care Development of 85 one and two bedroom apartments and associated resident facilities at Bicton near Shrewsbury to Cruden Construction.
Cruden has procured the contract through Bowsall Ltd, an experienced and successful affordable housing developer. They are specialists in land acquisition, securing planning and delivering package prices to Housing Associations across The North West, Yorkshire and the Midlands. Bowsall Ltd and The Wrekin Housing Trust chose Cruden Construction after a competitive tender procurement process and qualitative assessments that included visits to previous schemes constructed by our company.
The new project, Cruden Construction’s 27th contract in a fast growing sector, responding to the ageing population of the UK, reinforces the company’s position as arguably, the north’s leading contractor for the design and construction of extra care developments. From intimate 40 apartment developments through to schemes with over 240 apartments, Cruden has demonstrated a unique understanding of the sectors requirements, delivering tailored solutions to an exceptionally high quality level.
Designed by Architects, Jennings Design Associates around the needs of its residents, the Bicton development has been scaled to blend with the local built environment and to interface easily with the surrounding community.
In addition to the 85 apartments, the new building will feature facilities aimed at encouraging active and participatory lives including a multi-purpose room, café, restaurant and resident’s lounge. Supporting these facilities, there will also be a reception and lobby area, pamper and assisted bathrooms, disabled buggy store and charging area, guest sleepover rooms, laundry, staff offices and locker rooms.
When completed in 2017, the development will achieve BREEAM 2014 Multi Residential, Secured by Design and Lifetime Homes accreditations.
The scheme will be part of the “ShireLiving” brand, a partnership between The Wrekin Housing Trust and Choices Housing Association, both part of the Wrekin Housing Group.
It will be operated by Choices Housing who are experienced in delivering housing services, care and support for a broad range of residents with differing levels of care and support needs.
